Finally, a little back up…

Posted on Thursday 8 November 2007

More sponsorship money is flowing to sports, and more sports sponsorship money will flow to sports Websites according to the report from emarketer.com (read it here)

Sports is the largest category of sponsorship spending in North America. In 2006, $8.94 billion was spent on sports sponsorships in the region, representing two-thirds of the $13.39 billion total, according to IEG.

eMarketer projects that sports sponsorship spending in North America will increase to $13.24 billion by 2011, and that it will continue to represent between 66% and 69% of overall sponsorship spending in the region.

I feel like I’ve been writing about this a lot lately, but couldn’t resist sharing this info since it’s much more “official” than my OPINION.

Makes sense. As mass media splinters, advertisers look for effective means of differentiation. Enter sports sponsorship. Once they’re involved in sports sponsorship, they’ll see that the Web is the hottest thing going. Good news for everyone!

It’s interesting too how many American companies have gotten involved in international sports. For example, AIG spent millions of dollars to sponsor the English soccer club Manchester united. Of course, that team plus a couple of others now have American owners. I have to think it’s a good thing as both an American soccer fan and entrepreneur.
