This is the week we’re going to relase mycolts.net to the general public. We’re not planning to put any hype behind it at first. We prefer to launch quietly and give the system a chance to digest what we hope will be a steady influx of new users.
We’re ready. The site is good and the servers will hold up, but there’s so much left to do.
Every time I use the site I think of 10 things I want to add or change. There’s simply no end to it. That’s part of the reason we’re finally just putting it out there. Features will be added continually. Layouts will be tweaked to improved usability. Navigation markers and help copy will be added.
Fittingly, I just happened upon Mashable side-by-side comparison of MySpace versus Facebook. (Read it here). Just reading that list reinforces the never-ending feature parade that we’ve gotten ourelves into. I’m not comlaining, but it is daunting to think about how far ahead these two sites are.
Without a doubt we could have written this piece and likely we would have made the same conclusions. Facebook does seem to be grabbing the momentum. Trouble is, we started designing our site over a year ago when Myspace was still making all the buzz and Facebook was still closed.
Still, the Facebook case study gives me hope. They’ve become a solid #2 player, and have a chance to topple Myspace because they have a clear, and innovative strateg. It goes to show that immitating the compeition will always leave you breathing exhause fumes. At some point I’m hoping we can figure out some ways to take our site in new directions. Hopefully, these directions will be difficult to immitate. Not that we expect to be #1 in this game. Not by a longsot. However, we do expect to be a leader in sports and entertainment social nets…and perhaps a few other verticals too.
