Colts Cred - point chart

Posted on Wednesday 6 June 2007

So we’re talking about applying the concept of ’social currency” to the mycolts.net socia net…

…if your read the previous post (click here) and the comments that follow it you’ll make better sense of the this chart:

myColts Points
Points are awarded both positive and negative for actions within myColts.net and factor into an overall credibility system. This following table contains a list of actions within myColts.net that results in positive or negative point accruals. The point values awarded or negated can be adjusted by changing values in the database.

Point Auditing
As individual actions are taken by users points are recorded in an audit trail of points awarded. The points are summed on a scheduled basis (currently 30 minutes) and credited towards an overall point value. Every 30 days the current point value is recorded for each profile and the audit trail purged of history.

I think you guys will see that we’re planning to award point for all kinds of activity. We’re also planning to have leaderboards for newcomers, fast risers and overall leaders.

From your comments it feels like we’re on right track. Just need to throw in a few prizes to fuel the flames, eh?

The points table you posted would favour someone who was active, but did not necessarily further the website with useful content, insight, individuality and general “stickiness”.

In other words you value “quantity” of activity over the “quality” of activity on the site.

Perhaps adding a component of cred that is based on peer ratings of people’s contributions would be an improvement.

But maybe I miss the whole point - perhaps “banter” is what it’s all about !

Actually, you raise another good point. There are several ways that users can rate other users. There’s a star rating system attaced to comments (on profile pages, blogs and photos). These stars ratings will be combined with points earned through some algorithm to give the user his / her overall rank in the community.
