MySpace wily as Fox for Super Bowl ads

Posted on Monday 14 May 2007

A few days back I posted about Fox + Myspace + NFL doing some kind of deal for next year’s Super Bowl. I couldn’t say much about it because the story broke in the Wall St. Journal and I don’t have a subsription. OK, so I’m not a “scoop” sniffing reporter :-)

Anyway, I read this release from Reuters which gives a bit more detail.

MySpace and Fox will partner with the NFL to showcase SuperBowl advertisers on the social networking site.

This is a very exciting experiment which will surely have a trickle down effect to mycolts.net

Fox plans to run in-game promos to drive viewers to a special Super Bowl page on myspace. From there it appears there will be links to special pages for each of the Super Bowl sponsors. Inside these pages, viewers can go deeper into the sponsors’ offerings, review the Super Bowl spots and more.

We know that a high percentage of NFL fans are online as they watch football games. We know that online viewing of SuperBowl ads reached an all time high last year. We know that TV cannot deliver a as much detail, or extend calls to action the way Websites can…so why not extend the viewer experience onto the Web, personalize the interaction in order to move the viewer toward purchase or at least consdieration??

Why not, indeed!

For all these reasons I can’t wait to see how this pans out. Interestingly, we’re already on the street pitching our own version of this idea here in Indy, but instead of our TV broadcast, we’ll be selling packages to sponsors that combine in-game radio promos with customized pages on our Website.
