Good point by Joe. The fans that write blogs, produce home-made videos, those are the teams' biggest, most passionate fans. The trick is to provide them with "tools", as Joe so perfectly coined it, to become customer evangelists. Help them spread the gospel! Provide bloggers with creative...even access to the team, post-game interviews, etc. Be bold!

Now, in response to Pat's post, I think if teams are to compete with media at large, they need to become less biased. Can I turn to teamname.com to hear about the latest off-field scandal? Hardly. Team's right now have a media niche in that they control access to the team (press conferences, locker room access, behind the scenes, etc.). But if they want to compete with all of media, they need to break away from the "everything is always great in our world" news coverage. I understand that would be a difficult move, but it's also necessary to be taken seriously by fans.

How could we forget! Fans will increasingly become competition at least for eyeballs a la the need for teams to have strong social networking outlets. When publish becomes so easy how can you compete with a fan base? You have to embrace it and give them tools.

[...] Pat Coyle’s latest blog post is hard hitting. It’s a call to action for the NFL and teams to coordinate and start working together more closely. Pat makes several good points and even goes as far as to say “we may end up buying ads from Bud one day (instead of the other way around).” That’s a pretty bold claim, isn’t it? It is a bold statement, but when you consider how the Internet is turning industries upside down in front of our eyes he has a point. A problem we have in the NFL is working together is not in our DNA. Deep down teams don’t like each other, outsiders view the NFL as 32 departments working together building a single business product, however insiders know we are reinventing the wheel on many web projects instead of working together more closely. We need to ponder what Pat brings up. If we don’t we might all be buying ads on BudTV one day. [...]
