Yesterday (in this post) I introduced the concept of “no huddle” marketing, and I mentioned a couple of books that are great primers on the subject. One of these books, “Mavericks at Work,” is such essential reading that I am going to go out on a limb…
I’m so inspired and so convinced that this book will change the way you do your job that I’m willing to PAY for your copy of this book, if you’ll write a thoughtful review of the book for me to publish in this blog.

Why in the world am I buying books for strangers?
I’m trying to start something. I see the potential to form an on-line community of sports marketers. We share lots of common problems, we each have loads of data that others would benefit from learning, and yet for the most part we don’t collaborate, even though we’re not competitors.
To my knowledge there is no other body (outside this blog) within the sports marketing realm that is inviting dialogue around Web 2.0 subjects. Are we the only ones in sports who see that the Internet is shaking the foundation of our industry? I don’t thinks so, but if you look at the agendas for upcoming sports marketing conferences, you barely see the Internet mentioned!
So let’s work together to discover ways we can “open source” our strategies. Perhaps we can harness our collective intelligence to do our own jobs better.
To get your free copy of the book
Just write to me at (pdcoyle at gmail dot com) . (I type this address out to keep the spammers away). Send me your name, company name, snail mail address and E mail address. I won’t publish your personal information, but I will publish your review in this blog.
And you don’t have to work for a sports team. I welcome any voice into this conversation, from any industry, with any level of experience. It’s what the authors call an “unfocus” group!
I will send a copy of Mavericks at Work to the first 10 people who request them AND who promise to write reviews. I limit this to 10 because I’m not made of money, you know?
I’ve done this sort of thing before.
About 6 months ago I bought 10 copies of a book called “Naked Conversations” and gave them to 10 friends. I asked my friends to take a few weeks, read the book and then meet me for lunch to discuss the book. That one meeting has evolved into a thriving, monthly book club with 37 members (and growing) from all different industries here in Indianapolis.
Will anyone take me up on this offer??
Even as I write this I wonder if even 10 of my readers will pick up this offer and do anything with it. Perhaps you’re too busy. Maybe you’re cyncial. Or you’re not interested. Whatever. There a lots of reasons NOT to take me up on my offer. It’s easier that way. Just go back to your “huddle” and play your position like you always have. Nobody can fault you for it.
OR - perhaps you’re ready to go “no huddle”? To play with speed? To re-imagine your career?
Come on. Drop me a line. I dare you.
It’s 3pm on 1/9/07. Still 7 free books left! Come on guys…who’s hungry??
Thanks, Gary. Four books left!
It’s Noon on Wednesday. There are still 4 free books left. I’m gonna cut this off at 5pm EST today - so if you want a free book, send me an E mail soon!!!
Pat,
Just finished Naked Conversations. While I have to ponder the viability of blogging
in my business due to confidentiality issues, I made an extensive list of folks to pay it forward. They will be receiving their copies of the book soon. I also plan on making the time to pay some visits to see what’s out there. Who knows where that might lead? I I look forward to reading your next recommendation. Do I have to purchase my own copy this time?
Kevin
Kevin,
If you can make it to Indy, our book club meets 2nd Thursday of teach month. We’re reading Wikinomics for February and Digital Aboriginals for March. Join us any time.
The other coment I’ll add re: naked Conversations is that is supports my belief that the best marketing tool out there is put yourself out there and to actively advocate for others and to try to connect them to info that will benefit there pursuits. which of the three books do you recommend i read first?
If you’re interested in promoting the book, it would be far more effective IMO to let bloggers blog about it on THEIR blogs. That way more people are exposed to the book, this way, someone will have to come here to read your blog to be exposed to the book. If you had given the book to 10 bloggers, then the book would have gotten exposure on this blog, as well as 10 others.
Pat, I just got the book in the mail. Perfect timing, since I’ve been out of commission trying to write papers due this past weekend (and rooting for the inevitable Colts-Bears Superbowl). I’ll hack away at it and get back to you with some feedback. Thanks.
