Hello Pat, my name is Steve Huffman. I am actually the friend of the famed “Zack Legend.” I am the one who has been helping him with the videos. I have found your blog very interesting. I am excited to see Mycolts.net product.
That being said part of me wonders if “social networking sites” are the new Atkins diet. In the sense that every vender rushes to create one, only to watch it fizzle. Obviously these are the million dollar questions? If you build it, will they come? Is their value in “niche social networks?” Facebook (the original) seems to be the model for such niche networks. But sites like Myspace give me hope that the colt’s website will be successful. I have never seen a more poorly designed site, with constant glitches, and overall bad user interface be so popular. That leads me to think if you can actually somehow get the data & functionality people want (i.e., colts news, fantasy info, and a way to communicate) it could very well work. But no doubt untested copyright issues (on member posts) coupled with an organization like the colts being able to loosen the reins on giving people the freedom to post content and opinions while having ability/responsibility to monitor the site for offensive content.
I think you also have a question of what does the typical social network user look like. Is this a young person’s game (limiting advertisers). Or is it accurate the average user of myspace is 32. Will your average Joe or Jane, transfer pictures and videos to their PC to upload them to their internet parking space, and then do your advertising for you by inviting all their friends??? I also know average users don’t know what RSS is, but using them they would find great value. Can you make everything be as easy as it should be???? I hope the answer is YES.
Steve,
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. You’ve outlined many of the questions we seek to answer with mycolts.net. We don’t go into this KNOWING the answers. Wish we did. We go in with eyes wide open, looking for ways to gain traction. We owe a lot to the sites that have established social networking as the phenomenon it is today. I expect we’ll be able to build on these effots and expand on them. The good news is that we are in no particular hurry. While we do have sense of urgency to get our site launched soon, we see it as a long term program that could very well become the foundation of our marketing efforts, in particular, for the next generation of colts fans.
