I was reminded yet again this week that I’m not as “2.0 hip” as I’d like to be. In what is probably a classic mistake, I posted news on a few blogs about our upcoming “Colts Fan Network” launch. The problem is, I had not registered the domain “coltsfannetwork.com” and now that my cat is out of the bag, that domain name got sucked up by some anonymous hack who has parked an advertising page at that address. Man, is that annoying!
You’d think I would learn my lesson. 18 months ago I went to a domain name registration site looking for available names for a client of mine (this is back when I had my own company). Anyway, I found a name I liked, and it was available, but I didn’t register it right away. Big mistake. The next thing I knew, the domain was gone, and a porn site was parked there. I suppose the perpetrators are trying to extort cash when they do stuff like this. All I can say is “get a life”.
Still, lesson learned. I should have reserved “Colts Fan Network” before I ever uttered the phrase out loud. I didn’t think to do it because we never intended to use that address. Instead, we plan to use the URL “mycolts.net” which is safely registered (thank the Lord).
The good news is that we have had a branding dilemma solved for us. We had been trying to decide what’s the best name for our fan network. Should we promote it as the Colts Fan Network or simply promote the URL (mycolts.net). Now it seems we have little choice.
